When Someone Disappoints You Again
This isn’t the first time. You’ve had this exact conversation before, forgiven the same pattern before, hoped it was actually different this time before. And here you are again, disappointed by the same person, in almost the same way.
Part of you wonders if love is even reasonable to keep extending.
“It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” — 1 Corinthians 13:7 (NIV)
The One Point:
This isn’t a description of naivety, pretending the pattern doesn’t exist or that trust hasn’t already been broken more than once. Paul is describing a kind of love that keeps choosing to hope and persevere, even with full knowledge of someone’s track record, without that hope requiring blindness to reality. This doesn’t mean ignoring genuine patterns or refusing to set boundaries where they’re needed, love and wisdom aren’t opposites. It means the disappointment doesn’t have to be the final word on whether love is worth continuing to extend, even imperfectly, even again.
Thought to Ponder:
Who has disappointed you again recently, and what would it look like to keep loving them honestly, without pretending the pattern doesn’t exist?
Prayer:
Father, I’m disappointed again, and I don’t want to pretend otherwise.
Help me love honestly, without either denial or bitterness.
Give me wisdom for boundaries and grace for hope. Amen.
Today’s Declaration:
“My love can be honest about disappointment and still choose to hope.”
Today’s Step:
Name the specific disappointment honestly to God today, without minimizing it, and ask Him to show you what love and wisdom look like together in this situation.
