Courage Is Not the Absence of Fear

Nobody told you the fear would actually leave once you obeyed. You stepped into the hard conversation, the new assignment, the uncertain decision, still afraid, and somewhere along the way you started wondering if that meant you didn’t actually have the courage everyone talks about.

God’s charge to Joshua wasn’t a promise the fear would vanish first.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

The One Point:
God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous while acknowledging fear and discouragement were real possibilities standing right in front of him, about to lead a nation into unfamiliar territory. The command isn’t “feel no fear,” it’s “don’t let fear be the thing that stops you,” and the reason given isn’t Joshua’s own inner resolve, it’s God’s presence going with him. Courage was never about the absence of fear, it’s about moving forward anyway, because you’re not doing it alone. You can be afraid and still be walking in real courage, at the very same time.

Thought to Ponder:
What has fear convinced you that you lack courage for, when you might actually be more courageous than you realize simply by continuing to move forward afraid?

Prayer:
Father, I am afraid, and I’m asking You to help me move forward anyway.
Thank You that courage was never meant to depend on fear disappearing first.
Go with me wherever You’re asking me to go today. Amen.

Today’s Declaration:
“I can be afraid and courageous at the same time. God goes with me.”

Today’s Step:
Take one step today toward the thing fear has been holding you back from, specifically because you’re afraid, not because the fear is gone.

Further Study:
Deuteronomy 31:6 (Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid)
2 Timothy 1:7 (God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline)
