Holy Spirit

Is your spiritual fire burning low? Are you longing for a fresh encounter with the Holy Spirit – more power, more sensitivity, more anointing for the assignment God has placed on your life? These 50 prayer points for the Holy Spirit will reignite the fire and invite a fresh outpouring.

Acts 1:8 · Luke 11:13 · Ephesians 5:18 · John 16:13 · Romans 8:11

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

– INTRODUCTION –

The Holy Spirit is not a doctrine to be debated. He is not an experience reserved for a particular denomination. He is not a historical event confined to the pages of the book of Acts. He is the living, active, present-tense Person of the Godhead – dwelling in every believer, moving in the church, and available in fullness to every child of God who hungers for more of Him.

But hunger is the key word. Luke 11:13 records one of the most straightforward promises Jesus ever made: “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” The Holy Spirit is given to those who ask. Not those who qualify by performance. Not those who have reached a particular level of spiritual maturity. Those who ask. Those who hunger. Those who pray.

Ephesians 5:18 contains a command that is easy to read past: “Be filled with the Spirit.” The Greek construction is a present continuous passive imperative – which means it is not a once-for-all event but an ongoing, continuously repeated experience. The filling of the Holy Spirit is not a single moment in a believer’s history. It is a daily, ongoing, desperately needed reality that must be actively sought and received again and again.

Pray these 50 prayer points for the Holy Spirit with holy hunger. Pray them with expectation. Pray them knowing that the Father delights to pour out His Spirit on those who ask. And expect a fresh fire to fall.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
To be filled with the Holy Spirit means to be under the full control and influence of the Spirit of God in every area of your life. Ephesians 5:18 commands believers to be continuously filled – it is not a once-for-all event but an ongoing, daily experience. Just as a sail needs to be continuously filled with wind to move a ship, the believer needs to be continuously filled with the Spirit to live a Spirit-powered life. The filling produces boldness in witness (Acts 4:31), joy (Acts 13:52), wisdom (Acts 6:3), and the fruit and gifts of the Spirit.

How do I know if I have received the Holy Spirit?
Romans 8:9 says that anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him – which means every genuine believer has already received the Holy Spirit at salvation. The question is not whether you have the Spirit but whether the Spirit has all of you. The evidence of the Spirit’s presence in a believer’s life includes conviction of sin (John 16:8), assurance of salvation (Romans 8:16), the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23), and a hunger for God and His Word. The gifts of the Spirit, including tongues, are available to every believer who seeks them (1 Corinthians 14:5).

Can I pray for the Holy Spirit every day?
Not only can you – you should. Ephesians 5:18 uses the present continuous tense: keep being filled. Luke 11:13 is a standing invitation to ask the Father for the Holy Spirit at any time. The disciples who were filled at Pentecost were filled again in Acts 4:31 when they prayed together. Being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time transaction. It is a daily, ongoing posture of surrender, asking, and receiving. Make asking for the fresh filling of the Holy Spirit a part of your daily prayer life.

What is the difference between the Holy Spirit coming upon someone and dwelling within them?
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon specific individuals for specific tasks and could be withdrawn (as in the case of Saul in 1 Samuel 16:14 and David’s prayer in Psalm 51:11). In the New Covenant, the Holy Spirit permanently dwells within every believer (John 14:17, Romans 8:9). However, Scripture also speaks of the Spirit coming upon believers in additional power for specific Kingdom purposes – as in Acts 1:8 and Acts 4:31. The indwelling is permanent. The anointing and power for specific assignments can be renewed, increased, and specifically sought in prayer.

Is speaking in tongues the only evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
This is a question that has produced significant theological discussion. In the book of Acts, tongues are mentioned in connection with the Spirit’s coming in several instances (Acts 2:4, Acts 10:46, Acts 19:6). However, Acts 4:31 records a filling of the Holy Spirit where the specific manifestation mentioned is boldness, not tongues. The Bible does not limit the evidence of the Spirit’s filling to a single manifestation. What is universal is the transformation of life, the fruit of the Spirit, the gifts of the Spirit, and the empowerment for witness. Tongues is a genuine and valuable gift (1 Corinthians 14:5, 14:18) – but it is one gift among many.

How do I not grieve or quench the Holy Spirit? Ephesians 4:30 warns against grieving the Holy Spirit, and 1 Thessalonians 5:19 warns against quenching Him. Grieving the Spirit refers to acts of sin, particularly those involving the tongue – bitterness, wrath, evil speaking (Ephesians 4:31–32). Quenching the Spirit refers to suppressing or ignoring His promptings – the nudge to pray, to speak, to give, to go, to stop. To not grieve the Spirit: walk in ongoing repentance and holiness. To not quench the Spirit: cultivate sensitivity to His promptings and obey them quickly, even when they do not make natural sense.

He Is Still Falling

Acts 2 is not a closed chapter. The promise of Joel 2 – “I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh” – has not been exhausted. The Holy Spirit who fell in Jerusalem is still falling. Still convicting. Still empowering. Still transforming. Still filling every believer who opens their heart and asks.

You do not need to travel to a special conference to encounter the Holy Spirit. You do not need to wait for a particularly anointed minister to lay hands on you. You need to do what the disciples did in Acts 1 – gather, pray, and wait with expectation. The Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask.

Ask again today. Ask with hunger. Ask with surrender. Ask in faith. And receive the fresh fire that your life, your ministry, and your generation needs.
