– INTRODUCTION –

Have you ever been in a season where you could not see what God was doing? A season where every door seemed closed, every prayer seemed unanswered, and every circumstance seemed to contradict everything God had promised you? If that is where you are today, then you are standing in the exact same place where faith is forged.
Walking by faith and not by sight is one of the most searched and most needed messages in the body of Christ today – because trusting God when you cannot see is perhaps the hardest thing a believer is ever asked to do. The natural man demands evidence before he believes. But the life of faith works in the exact opposite direction: you believe first, and then you see.
2 Corinthians 5:7 is one of the shortest and most powerful verses in the New Testament: โ€œFor we walk by faith, not by sight.โ€ Eight words. A complete philosophy of the Christian life. A total inversion of how the world operates. And for every believer who will dare to live by it, a doorway into the supernatural.
This sermon will take you through what it truly means to walk by faith, the biblical heroes who modelled it, the practical steps to apply it, and the unshakeable promises God has made to those who dare to trust Him in the dark.

– PART 1 –

What Does It Mean to Walk by Faith and Not by Sight?

To walk by faith means to make your decisions, carry your emotions, and build your expectations on the Word of God rather than on what your natural senses perceive. It means that when your eyes say โ€œitโ€™s over,โ€ your spirit says โ€œGod is not finished.โ€ It means that when your bank account says โ€œthere is nothing,โ€ your faith says โ€œJehovah Jireh provides.โ€

Walking by sight means living by the evidence you can see, touch, taste, smell, and hear. It is the natural default of every human being. The problem with walking by sight is that your natural senses have no access to the supernatural. They cannot perceive what God is doing behind the curtain of the invisible realm. They cannot read the end from the beginning. They cannot see the miracle that is one day away.

Hebrews 11:1 gives us Godโ€™s own definition of faith: โ€œFaith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.โ€ Notice the language: substance, evidence. Faith is not wishful thinking – it is a spiritual substance. It is not pretending things are fine when they are not – it is knowing that the One who holds all things is working even when you cannot see it.

KEY TRUTH: Faith is not the absence of difficulty. It is the presence of God in the middle of the difficulty. Walking by faith does not mean your situation is easy – it means you have chosen to believe that your God is bigger than your situation.

5 Reasons Believers Stop Walking by Faith

Before we can walk consistently by faith, we need to understand what stops us. These five obstacles are the most common reasons believers drift from faith back to sight:

1. Prolonged Waiting

When the answer does not come as quickly as we expected, doubt begins to creep in. But Habakkuk 2:3 declares: โ€œThough it tarries, wait for it, because it will surely come.โ€ Delay is not denial. God is always on time – He is simply never on our schedule.

2. Overwhelming Circumstances

When what we see with our eyes is louder than what we hear in our spirit, sight wins. Peter walked on water until he looked at the waves (Matthew 14:30). The moment we fix our gaze on the size of the problem rather than the size of our God, we sink.

3. Unanswered Questions

We want to understand before we obey. But Proverbs 3:5 warns us: โ€œLean not on your own understanding.โ€ God did not explain to Abraham where he was going (Hebrews 11:8). He simply said go – and Abraham went. Faith does not always come with an explanation.

4. Past Disappointments

When God did not come through the way we expected in a previous season, scar tissue forms over our faith. We become guarded. We protect ourselves from hope because hope feels dangerous. But Romans 5:5 declares: โ€œHope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts.โ€

5. The Voices Around Us

The ten spies said the giants were too big. Two said God was bigger (Numbers 13โ€“14). The majority voice is not always the faith voice. Walking by faith sometimes means standing alone – like Caleb, who had a different spirit and followed God fully (Numbers 14:24).

โ€œTrust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.โ€ Proverbs 3:5โ€“6 (NKJV)

6 Biblical Heroes Who Walked by Faith When They Could Not See

The great Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11 is Godโ€™s own testimony to what is possible when a human being chooses to walk by faith and not by sight. These six men and women show us that every season of โ€œI cannot seeโ€ is a platform for a miracle:

1. Abraham – He Obeyed Before He Knew Where He Was Going

Hebrews 11:8 records the extraordinary fact: โ€œBy faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.โ€ He had no GPS, no map, no explanation – only the voice of God. And that was enough. Abrahamโ€™s obedience before understanding is the highest model of walking by faith.

2. Noah – He Built an Ark Without a Drop of Rain

For 120 years, Noah built a boat on dry land in response to a flood that no one had ever seen. The rain had never fallen in that way before. The mockers were many. But Hebrews 11:7 says he moved with โ€œgodly fearโ€ – a reverence for the Word of God that outweighed every natural contradiction. When you cannot see, build anyway.

3. Joseph – He Held a Dream Through a Pit, a Slave Market, and a Prison

Joseph received a dream at seventeen. Before it was fulfilled, he went through the pit, the slave auction, the false accusation, and thirteen years of prison. At no point could he see how the dream would come true. But Genesis 39:2 records repeatedly: โ€œThe Lord was with Joseph.โ€ What you cannot see with your eyes, God is working behind the scenes. Hold the dream.

4. The Woman with the Issue of Blood – She Pressed Through What She Could Not See

Twelve years of suffering. Spent everything. Grew worse. No natural evidence that reaching Jesus would work. But Mark 5:28 tells us she said within herself: โ€œIf only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.โ€ She spoke faith before she saw the result. She pressed through the crowd. And virtue flowed. Faith always makes a demand on the supernatural.

5. The Three Hebrew Boys – They Trusted God Even Without a Guaranteed Outcome

In Daniel 3:17โ€“18, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego gave one of the most extraordinary faith declarations in Scripture: โ€œOur God is able to deliver usโ€ฆ but even if He does notโ€ฆ we will not serve your gods.โ€ They did not know whether they would come out of the fire. They chose to trust God regardless. That is the highest form of walking by faith – faith that does not depend on the outcome.

6. Mary – She Said Yes to What She Could Not Fully Understand

When the angel appeared and told Mary she would conceive the Son of God as a virgin, there was no scientific framework, no social precedent, and no visible sign. Yet Luke 1:38 records her response: โ€œLet it be to me according to your word.โ€ Maryโ€™s yes in the absence of visible evidence became the doorway through which the Saviour entered the world. Your yes to God – even when you cannot see – can change everything.

7 Practical Steps to Trusting God When You Cannot See

Walking by faith is not passive. It requires intentional, daily choices. Here are seven practical steps for how to trust God when you cannot see:

1. Feed Your Faith More Than Your Fear

Romans 10:17 declares: โ€œFaith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.โ€ You cannot walk by faith if you are spending more time in the news, in worry, and in the opinions of fearful people than you are in the Word of God. Feed what you want to grow.

2. Speak What God Says, Not What You See

Romans 4:17 says God โ€œcalls those things which do not exist as though they did.โ€ Abraham, at nearly a hundred years old with a barren wife, called himself the father of many nations because God called him that. Your confession shapes your reality. Speak faith, even when sight disagrees.

3. Remember What God Has Already Done

Psalm 77:11 declares: โ€œI will remember the works of the Lord.โ€ When you cannot see what God is doing now, rehearse what He has already done. Build your faith on your history with God. The God who came through before is the same God you are trusting today.

4. Take the Next Step, Even in the Dark

Isaiah 42:16 says: โ€œI will bring the blind by a way they did not knowโ€ฆ I will make darkness light before them.โ€ Notice: God makes the darkness light before them – as they walk. Not before they step out. The light comes as you move. Obedience is often the trigger for clarity.

5. Surround Yourself with Faith-Filled People

The ten faithless spies spread their unbelief and an entire generation perished in the wilderness (Numbers 14). The people you allow to speak into your life in a season of uncertainty will either strengthen or destroy your faith. Choose your inner circle wisely.

6. Pray Specifically and Persistently

Philippians 4:6โ€“7 instructs: โ€œBe anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.โ€ Vague anxiety keeps you in the dark. Specific prayer brings the peace of God that passes all understanding.

7. Rest in the Sovereignty of God

Psalm 37:23 declares: โ€œThe steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.โ€ Even the steps you did not plan. Even the detour. Even the delay. Godโ€™s sovereignty means that nothing that has happened to you has surprised Him, and nothing that is coming can outrun His grace. You can rest.

โ€œNow faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.โ€ Hebrews 11:1โ€“2 (NKJV)

– PART 5 –

4 Promises God Makes to Those Who Walk by Faith

Walking by faith is never a gamble – it is always a covenant. God has made specific, unbreakable promises to those who choose to trust Him when they cannot see. Here are four of them:

1. He Will Direct Your Path

Proverbs 3:6 promises: โ€œIn all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.โ€ When you surrender your need to understand and simply acknowledge God in every decision, He takes responsibility for your direction. You do not need to see the whole road – only the next step.

2. He Will Never Leave You in the Dark Permanently

Isaiah 42:16 is one of the most tender promises in the Old Testament: โ€œI will bring the blind by a way they did not knowโ€ฆ These things I will do for them, and not forsake them.โ€ God never abandons His people in a tunnel. He always leads them through to the other side.

3. What You Cannot See Is Working for Your Good

Romans 8:28 is the great promise for the season of confusion: โ€œAnd we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.โ€ All things – including the painful things, the confusing things, the things that made no sense. All things are working together.

4. Your Faith Will Not Go Unrewarded

Hebrews 11:6 declares: โ€œWithout faith it is impossible to please God, but he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.โ€ God is a rewarder. Every season of trusting Him in the dark is building a testimony that heaven is watching and that earth will one day see.

PROPHETIC DECLARATION OF FAITH

CONFESS THIS ALOUD OVER EVERY SITUATION YOU CANNOT YET SEE
I walk by faith and not by sight! My eyes do not determine my future – Godโ€™s Word does. I trust in the Lord with all my heart. I lean not on my own understanding. I acknowledge Him in every step and He is directing my path. What I cannot see, God is working. What I do not understand, God is ordering. The steps of my life are ordered by the Lord. I will not be moved by what I see. I will not be shaken by what I feel. I will not give up because of what I do not yet understand. My God is working behind the scenes on my behalf. He who promised is faithful. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen and Amen!

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, I thank You for the gift of faith. I thank You that You did not leave me to walk through this life by what I can see – You have given me a higher way. Lord, wherever I am in a season of uncertainty, of waiting, of not understanding – I choose today to walk by faith and not by sight. I choose to trust You even when I cannot see You moving. I choose to believe Your Word above my circumstances. Strengthen my faith, Lord. Where doubt has crept in, uproot it. Where fear has taken hold, displace it with Your perfect love. Order my steps. Lead me by a way I do not know. Make my darkness light before me. And let the life I live be a testimony to the faithfulness of the God I serve. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WALKING BY FAITH

What does it mean to walk by faith and not by sight?
Walking by faith means making your decisions, carrying your emotions, and building your expectations based on the Word of God rather than what your natural senses perceive. It means trusting that God is working even when you cannot see evidence of it. It is the opposite of the worldโ€™s approach, which demands proof before belief. Faith declares: I believe God, therefore I will see – not I see, therefore I believe.

How do I trust God when things are not working out?
Start by remembering what God has already done in your life (Psalm 77:11). Feed your faith daily through the Word of God (Romans 10:17). Speak what God says rather than what you see (Romans 4:17). Take the next step of obedience even in the dark – God promises to make the way light as you walk (Isaiah 42:16). Surround yourself with faith-filled community and pray specifically and persistently (Philippians 4:6โ€“7).

Is it wrong to acknowledge that things are difficult while still walking by faith? Not at all. Walking by faith does not mean pretending everything is fine when it is not. The Psalms are full of honest laments from men who were struggling but still chose to trust God. Psalm 42:5 is a perfect example: โ€œWhy are you cast down, O my soul?โ€ – that is honest acknowledgement of pain – followed by: โ€œHope in God, for I shall yet praise Him.โ€ That is faith. You can be honest about the difficulty and still choose to trust God.

What if I have been walking by faith for years and still have not seen the answer? Hebrews 11 includes men and women who โ€œdied in faith, not having received the promisesโ€ (Hebrews 11:13). Their faith was not wasted – it was building something eternal. However, for most seasons of waiting, the answer is coming. Habakkuk 2:3 promises: โ€œThough it tarries, wait for it, because it will surely come.โ€ Continue to pray, continue to obey, and continue to trust. Consider whether there is any specific area where God may be asking for a deeper step of surrender or obedience.

What is the difference between faith and presumption? Faith is based on the Word and promises of God. Presumption is claiming something God has not promised and acting as though He did. True faith does not manufacture promises – it stands on what God has already said. If what you are believing for is grounded in a genuine scripture or a confirmed word from God, that is faith. If it is based purely on desire or expectation without scriptural grounding, it risks crossing into presumption. The safeguard is always the Word.

How can I strengthen my faith to trust God more? Romans 10:17 is your answer: โ€œFaith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.โ€ There is no shortcut. The more time you spend in Scripture – reading it, meditating on it, confessing it, hearing it preached – the stronger your faith becomes. Combine this with a community of faith-filled believers, a consistent prayer life, and a habit of recording and celebrating every time God comes through. Faith grows through use and through testimony.

God Has Never Lost a Battle in the Dark

The God you are trusting has never once been surprised by a circumstance. He has never been outmaneuvered by the enemy. He has never looked at your situation and wondered what to do. He is the Alpha and the Omega .He already sees your end from your beginning.

Your season of not seeing is not a season of Godโ€™s absence. It is often the season of His deepest work. The roots of the oak tree go deepest in drought. The character of the believer is formed in the dark seasons when faith has nothing to hold onto but the naked Word of God.

Keep walking. Keep trusting. Keep declaring. The light is coming. And when it comes, you will look back at this season of walking by faith and understand why God asked you to trust Him through what you could not see.
