When the Answer Is No
You asked, specifically, more than once. And the answer that came back wasn’t a delay, it was an actual no. The door stayed shut. The healing didn’t come the way you asked for it. The situation didn’t change despite everything you brought to God about it.
Paul knew that answer personally.
“Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’” – 2 Corinthians 12:8–9 (NIV)
The One Point:
God didn’t ignore Paul’s request or leave it unanswered, He answered it directly, and the answer was no. That’s a different experience than silence or delay, and it deserves to be named honestly rather than reframed into something more comfortable. A no from God isn’t evidence of His absence or a failure of your faith, Paul wasn’t lacking faith when he asked three times. Sometimes the no comes with something else attached, not the removal of the problem, but sufficient grace to carry it. That’s not the answer you wanted, but it isn’t nothing either.
Thought to Ponder:
Where have you received an actual no from God, and have you let yourself grieve that honestly instead of pretending it was something else?
Prayer:
Father, this wasn’t the answer I wanted, and I won’t pretend otherwise.
Thank You that Your grace is sufficient, even when the answer is no.
Help me trust You in the disappointment, not just in the granted requests. Amen.
Today’s Declaration:
“Even when the answer is no, God’s grace is sufficient for me.”
Today’s Step:
Name honestly, in prayer today, one specific no you’ve received from God, and ask Him for the grace Paul describes, rather than asking Him to reverse the answer again.
