Speaking Truth in Love

You’ve been sitting on something you know needs to be said. Not gossip, not criticism for its own sake, an actual truth that could genuinely help, if you could just find a way to say it that doesn’t sound like an attack.

So you keep saying nothing, and calling it kindness.

“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” – Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)

The One Point:
Paul doesn’t present truth and love as opposing forces you have to choose between. He describes them working together, truth without love tends to wound, but love without truth tends to enable, and neither one alone produces the growth he’s describing here. Silence dressed up as kindness often isn’t kindness at all, it’s avoidance. Speaking truth in love doesn’t mean softening the truth until it disappears, it means saying the real thing, with genuine care for the person hearing it, rather than either bluntness or silence.

Thought to Ponder:
What true thing have you been avoiding saying to someone, mistaking your silence for love when it might actually be avoidance?

Prayer:
Father, give me courage to speak truth, and wisdom to speak it in love.
Help me stop confusing silence with kindness.
Let my words build up, even when they’re hard to say. Amen.

Today’s Declaration:
“I can speak truth and love at the same time. Silence isn’t always kindness.”

Today’s Step:
If there’s a true, necessary thing you’ve been avoiding saying to someone, pray about how to say it in love today, and take the first step toward saying it.
