You Are Not Your Mistakes

The thing you did keeps introducing you before you get the chance to introduce yourself. In your own head, at least. The failure, the relapse, the decision you can’t undo, it’s become the headline, and everything else about you reads like a footnote.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1 (NIV)

The One Point:
Paul writes this immediately after an entire chapter describing the war between what he wants to do and what he actually does, he’s not writing to people who’ve got it together. “No condemnation” doesn’t mean the mistake didn’t happen or didn’t matter. It means the mistake no longer gets to be your identity. Condemnation says: this is who you are. Conviction says: this doesn’t match who you actually are in Christ, and change is possible. You are not the worst thing you’ve done. You are who God says you are in Christ Jesus, and that verdict was never up for renegotiation based on your record.

Prayer:
Father, thank You that my mistakes don’t get the final word over who I am.
Remove the condemnation I’ve been carrying that You already removed.
Help me live from who You say I am, not what I’ve done. Amen.

Today’s Declaration:
“I am not my mistakes. I am who God says I am in Christ.”

Today’s Step:
Name the specific mistake you’ve been quietly defining yourself by, and speak Romans 8:1 over it out loud today, by name.

Further Study:
Micah 7:19 (He will hurl our iniquities into the depths of the sea)
2 Corinthians 5:17 (The old has gone, the new is here)
