Joy As a Choice, Not a Feeling
Nobody is asking you to fake being happy today. That’s not what’s coming.
But there’s a difference between waiting for a feeling to arrive before you can function, and choosing something steadier underneath the feeling, whatever it happens to be this morning. The people of Israel had every reason to weep the day this verse was spoken. Nehemiah told them something else was actually available to them.
“Nehemiah said, ‘Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.’” – Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)
The One Point:
This moment comes right after the people heard God’s Word read aloud and wept, overwhelmed by how far they’d fallen short. Nehemiah doesn’t tell them their grief was wrong. He tells them not to stay there, because joy in the Lord wasn’t dependent on their performance or their mood, it was a source of strength available regardless. Joy here isn’t a feeling you manufacture. It’s something you draw from, rooted in who God is, not in how today happens to feel. You can be tired, uncertain, even grieving, and still access that strength, because it was never sourced from your circumstances in the first place.
Thought to Ponder:
Where have you been waiting to feel joyful before you’ll let yourself draw on God’s strength today?
Prayer:
Father, my feelings today are what they are, and I bring them honestly.
Let Your joy be my strength, not my mood.
Help me draw from You, regardless of how today feels. Amen.
Today’s Declaration:
“The joy of the Lord is my strength, whatever today feels like.”
Today’s Step:
Do one small thing today that reflects joy as a choice, not a feeling, sharing something, encouraging someone, or simply thanking God out loud, even before the feeling catches up.
